Linux is pronounced "Lih-nucks"

Ubuntu is pronounced Ooo. Boon.
Too.
The word "ubuntu" is from the African Zulu language and
translates as "humanity to others" or "I am what I am because of
who we all are."
Ubuntu (philosophy)
from Wikipedia
Linus Torvalds, from Finland, often sited as the creator of the Linux computer
operating system (but actually it sounds like he created the kernal and not
the system. see "Some History" below)
(pronounced LEE-nuhs TOR-valdz
See:
http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/d1083/Linus_Torvalds
Linux is a contraction for Linus' Unix; the short i sound
preferred by most (including Torvalds) derives from the Swedish pronunciation
of Linus.

System requirements
Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) is available for PC, 64-Bit PC and
Intel-based Mac architectures. Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) runs
well with as little as 384 Mb RAM. (The installer requires a minimum of 256
Mb RAM, while the alternative installer can run using only 192 Mb RAM.)
Netbooks can run Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope.
The install takes between 3-4 Gb hard drive space, and 8 - 10 Gb will be
needed to run comfortably.
If you have an older computer with less memory than this, consider
Xubuntu (if between 256 Mb and 512 Mb RAM) or PuppyLinux or DSL (if less
than 256 Mb RAM).

Ubuntu 9.04 Advanced Installation Information

Enabling Compiz Fusion On An Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop with an NVIDIA GeForce
video card--Compiz Fusion comes installed on Ubuntu 9.04 (so you can
do the "cube" etc.), but you still probably need to update your video card
drivers (see next link below), Install Simple Compizconfig Settings Manager
(simple-ccsm), select Custom on the Visual Effects tab (Go to System >
Preferences > Appearance... ), and finally configure Compiz Fusion.
This link will explain and give you screenshots.
You Tube Videos on Compiz Fusion (fancy desktop effects)--the Videos
below may not match your computer experience exactly, but they will give you
the general picture. Remember, Compiz Fusion comes installed in Ubuntu
9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), you just need to install the Compizconfig Settings
Manager using the add/remove programs or Synaptic Package Manager. You
do not need to type code in the terminal. Have fun!
The Free Software
Definition -
From the FSF (Free Software Foundation). "Free software" is a
matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of
"free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer." And: Another group
has started using the term "open source" to mean something close (but not
identical) to "free software." We prefer the term "free software" because,
once you have heard that it refers to freedom rather than price, it calls to
mind freedom. The word "open" never refers to freedom.
